The French should be held accountable as they are the ones who are quite happy to supply the boats and escort the migrants to our waters non!

So they enter Europe in the west or south, and travel though multiple European nations that failed to stop them and send them home or process them. But it’s our fault somehow even though these people could be dealt with before they even got to France?

The harsh truth is the only people responsible are the migrants. No one forced them into a dinghy, and the state cannot always be expected to save people from themselves.
Disastrous_Fruit1525 on
Is it our fault because we closed our border to FOM, or because we closed our border to trade. It takes so long to get from Calais to Dover by lorry now they don’t bother. Is it our fault that the UK is better than France as a place to live. I guess it must be.

> He did condemn the smugglers, but most of his comments focused on the lure of what he views as Britain’s loosely regulated job market, that acts like a magnet, drawing young Eritreans, determined Sudanese, Afghans, Syrians and Iraqis to this coastline, convinced that they if they can just make it across this last, short stretch of water – or even half way across – they’ll end up in a country where they can find work, even without the right paperwork.

How is it either countries problem that refugees are putting their lives at risk to themselves and we somehow are responsible for their deaths? Yes I can sympathise with their plight in their own countries but we have a vetting process even if it is stretched to its limits to try and filter out any dangerous individuals coming to the nation. Illegal crossing like these is a mockery to those who do it via the process and I can guarantee as desperate as they are, not all of them are here able to adapt to Western culture and willingly respect the host nation.
In the end, it is not our problem
strongfavourite on
as long as there is war, famine etc. there will be refugees
and as long as Britain proclaims to be part of the civilised world it will have to agree to accept some (just like every other developed nation)
provide safe legal routes for refugees to enter the UK, and boat crossings will decrease
enter a refugee sharing agreement with France and other EU countries, and we can legally send excess refugees to those countries

Sorry France this one is on you.
We are trying to fix the problems of 14 years of bandits ruling our country, but it will take time. In the meantime that high ground you seem to think you’re standing on is actually a marsh of “not your problem” and stinky roast beefland is more attractive than France.
If the unseaworthy boats are sailing from your shores it’s your responsibility to stop it to avoid disasters like this, in the same way that it’s our responsibility once they get here.
Contemptable, in the same way the Tories were contemptable in failing to deal with this problem.

It’s common sense that it’s our fault. It needs to be made clear that there is absolutely no point even attempting to cross the channel in a boat as it simply will not get you in to the UK, and if anything will hinder your chances. Over several years the message will get through and people will stop making their way to Northern France.
At the same time there needs to be more options for genuine asylum seekers to come to the UK, rather than people who simply want a better quality of life. I can sympathise with people wanting to better their lives, however it’s not what the asylum system exists for, and those lying that they are in danger or being persecuted are standing in the way of people who genuinely are.
Instead however, we will continue to bimble on as we are; both France and the UK doing a half hearted job. The issue will continue and thousands will die over the next few decades, and we will be to blame.

They are a problem of France’s making. The whole thing could be stopped today permanently, simply by France announcing it would allow the UK to return anyone making the crossing, immediately back to France. Nobody would bother after that, because it would become pointless.
CPH3000 on
The only obligation the UK should have to these people is to return them safely to another country.
The reason they’re attracted to coming here is because there are literally no negative consequences of doing so. It is 100% the fault of successive UK governments.

Problem is, the French are right.
We have a ridiculously open society where someone can come over here and live with almost no chance of being caught as an illegal immigrant. They can access services with no problems at all.
Try doing this is Spain. Any interaction with a government service (including healthcare) requires a DNI. Don’t have one …. go away. Want to get something delivered – DNI. Anything to do with driving – DNI. Financial services of any sort – DNI. Renting property – DNI. Any interaction with the police – DNI, or you’re in the back of the van.
Unless you have a Spanish ID number or a third country passport, you’re utterly screwed in Spain.
So of course migrants want to leave European countries that have got their shit together and come to the UK – despite all the propaganda, the UK is in no way “hostile” to immigrants.

It is true tho. The UK is ok with illegal immigration and illegal workers who they can exploit and that’s why they are letting them with masses. They cross multiple countries but they are looking for the best one with best benefits and that’s why they are trying to cross the channel. It’s their choice and they are encouraged to do it. It feels like UK doesn’t have existing borders and people are free to come if they are just using the boats and not only that but live in the country too. No documents or background check is needed.

2. Make one or two adjustments – automatic denial of refugee status if entering the country illegally (the boats are in the “in-thing” at the moment). Return to France (without triggering a war) or country of origin.
