I’m not sure a lot of people could do what this family did. It’s the first time I have read a victim’s family take such a decision.

    > At Tameside Magistrates Court last Thursday (August 29), Ali admitted the lesser charge of driving without due care and attention. He was fined £300, ordered to pay £205 in costs and victim surcharge and had six points added to his driving licence. The court heard he already had three points on his licence for speeding two years ago.

With the family not supporting a prosecution I’m not sure what the judge could have done (though happy to be corrected if I am wrong).

    > The van then seems to bounce as if going over a bump as the girl, who was wearing black, came out from underneath the back of the vehicle. He then stops and the girl lies motionless on the road.

    This was excruciating to read.

I think drivers need to be mindful of the road. A car can be a weapon after all.

  2. Similar thing happened to me when I was 10, was riding down my road on my bike when a car shot out of a driveway in reverse, hit my bike and I got trapped underneath the car with its wheels on my bike’s wheels. The driver didn’t even notice, but only stopped after I repeatedly banged on his car and screamed while my leg was being crushed. “Oh, I wondered what that noise was.”

And, of course, it was my fault and my parents punished me and never let me ride a bike again.

  3. According to the rac, the stopping distance at 30mph is around 75ft, so 100ft is only around half a second extra to process the noise and start decelerating (30mph = 44ft per second)

  4. >She was left with a broken collarbone and elbow as well as friction burns.

Friction burns? He turned her into a flesh crayon and was only given a 500 quid fine?

    According to the article

“The girl’s family declined to support a prosecution, meaning he could not be charged with causing serious injury by careless driving.”

    WTF?!?!

Were they the victims of witness intimidation, or do they just care more about some random driver than their own daughter?

I remember being outside my house working on my car when a car making a horrible scraping noise, with an engine rattling it’s tits off, pulled to a stop opposite. The lady driving asked if I knew about cars and if I could have a look. Being in my overalls and half under a car up on axle stands I couldn’t really claim I had no idea so I wandered over. Had a look underneath to see what was scraping and she had a crushed up traffic cone jammed under the remains of a smashed oil sump. Given it was only dripping a tiny remaining bit of oil, it’d presumably been that way for a little while. “Can I drive it home?”. No love, it’s fucked. Anyway – some people shouldn’t be allowed cars.
