I have had more than one friend suffer a severe medical complication with a pregnancy resulting in a baby dying or learning that the fetus would never survive to birth, at around 21-23 weeks. The trauma and suffering and grief they went through cannot be described. A close family member was pregnant with twins and went into labor at 21 weeks, losing both. The idea that there are states where she might not have received compassionate medical care in that awful time makes me ill. These jackasses lie about late term pregnancy loss and make it sound like democrats are baby murderers, and they don’t.even.care about babies or children. They don’t care when children get shot in their classrooms. They only care about winning.

The origin of this highly misleading and offensive “faux” is an interview Glen Northam gave while serving as Virginia’s governor.
The topic was that 0.9% of abortions performed late in the pregnancy (after 20 weeks or so). Northam is a trained obstetrician who had practiced medicine for years before becoming a politician, so his answer was informed by real-world experience.
He said doctors only perform these late pregnancy abortions when the harm from not doing them is worse than the harm of doing them. He pointed out that both boards of medicine and the Hippocratic oath require this, which is why he saw no value in involving the legal system.
The question was, “what would happen if the parents of a non-viable fetus decided against an abortion and went to term?” It’s a legit question that got a legit answer.
It’s rare, but sometimes a fetus survives to term with anomalies that are incompatible with life. It might be missing a liver or other vital organs. It’s lungs might be too small to let it breath properly. There may be no brain, or spinal column.
Northam said that they would first birth the baby and stabilize the mother. Then they would do an examination of the newborn and consult with the family on the next steps. He said there are basically three options: 1) hand the infant to the mother as-is and let it die with skin-to-skin contact, 2) give the infant enough painkillers to make it comfortable and let it die with the parents holding it, or 3) make an all-out effort to buy a few more days of life with surgeries and other treatments in the NICU. None of the options change the fact that the kid’s future is to suffer for a few days and then die.
He explained that all three decisions were extremely traumatic for the parents, so some parents opt for an even more traumatic course of action as a kindness or mercy – abort the fetus before it can biologically experience pain.
This option for a quiet and merciful death is the one that the “pro-life” movement wants to block.
They have been told it is being done on healthy, viable kids by folks like Trump who just wants their votes so he can cut taxes on billionaires.
