Fans gather to see over 100-year-old steam locomotive Fans of a more than 100-year-old steam locomotive known as the SL Hitoyoshi gathered in western Japan to see it.

The engine was built in 1922. It carried tourists in Kyushu in recent years until it was retired in March.

The SL Hitoyoshi was moved to a rail yard in Kitakyushu City from Kumamoto City on Monday for repairs.

Kyushu Railway Company showed it to fans at an event on the same day.

The work of installing a key part in the locomotive was demonstrated. Visitors also had an opportunity to sit in the driver’s seat.

A fan who says he rode the train in its final service said he had a great experience in this event.

Another said it was worth coming from Aichi Prefecture in central Japan because he was able to enter the driver’s cab. He also said he wanted the locomotive to run more as it still looks beautiful.

The railway company will donate the locomotive to Hitoyoshi City. It is expected to be displayed in front of Hitoyoshi Station from November.
