US presidential nominee Trump says IVF costs could be covered if he is elected US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he wants to make in-vitro fertilization, or IVF, treatments free if he wins a second term.

The former US president made the remark at a campaign event in Michigan, one of the battleground states, on Thursday.

He said IVF treatments are expensive and out of reach for many people and that he has been in favor of the treatment “from the beginning”. He said under a Trump administration, “your government will pay for – or your insurance company – will be mandated to pay for all costs associated with IVF treatment, fertilization for women.”

The remark apparently reflects Trump’s aim of warding off criticism from the Democrats and winning the support of young voters.

The Democrats have been warning that IVF treatments could be banned if Trump is reelected.

Meanwhile, some conservative Christians, who constitute a Republican support base, are calling for restrictions of IVF treatments.
