Greetings from Jeddah, gentlemen.

Today I came to the Asfan barracks/castle, built by the Ottomans in the 18th century to control the Mecca-Medina road. This was once a place where soldiers and ammunition were located, and was sometimes used as a police station, and is one of the rare Ottoman structures still standing.

Another Turkish structure in this region, the Ajyad Castle, was demolished by the Saudi administration in 2002 to build a clock tower in Mecca 💀

Apart from this, there is another Ottoman barracks right in the heart of Jeddah. It is a castle built during the reign of Yavuz Sultan Selim in the 1500s. If you want, I can go there too.

  1. Photo is the stairs leading down to the soldiers’ rooms. Photo 6 looks like the places where the soldiers kept watch, but I don’t know much about it. Photo 8 and 9 show the view of the castle area from the ground.

Happy August 30th Victory Day 🇹🇷

  1. Not: Kaleye girişler yasak, kapı zincirli ve önünde dikenli teller bulunuyor. Gizli girdim. Kaleye tırmanınca üst kapıda bir alarm ve yanında bilgi amaçlı bir karekod var ama alarmın kabloları kesik ve karekodun öylesine konduğunu düşünüyorum.

  2. İnsanın başka ülkede kendi kültüründen izler keşfetmesi muhteşem bir his olsa gerek.
