I don’t think it’s fair. The person who had the room will have made plans around it. I think a hotel should be able to cancel a reservation but there should be a large financial penalty for doing so or the guest should also be able to cancel a booking at the drop of a hat if they found a cheaper room.

I went to a wedding in April this year.

Two weeks before the event the hotel called to say they had cancelled my booking as some Tory party conference was in place.

They actually had the cheek to ask if I’d like a refund?!

Cancelled, but couldn’t find anywhere near with availability (all the local ones had now been booked up by other wedding guests) ended up 10miles away, no longer walking distance as the previous booking was.

As other commenters have said, sometimes shit happens; but you can absolutely guarantee if I wanted to cancel it wouldn’t be a simple, oh yeah sorry.

  3. Shitey behaviour

Imagine their faces should it be the other way round, the sense of entitlement to keep your money they would display

  4. Technical error my arse, I hope anyone affected checks the T&Cs to see if they have any stipulation that they can cancel at will, and if not, report them to (presumably) Trading Standards

  5. Never accept this as a customer. I work for a hotel and in almost all cases hotels have to honour the original price or find you an alternative of the same quality. Same quality would also mean similar location as well as stuff like type of accomodation. They are trying to get you to break the contract by cancelling your booking. Under no circumstances do it. Contact the platform you booked through.

I have sympathy for the cancelled guests, but this comment from the ‘Night Time Economy Adviser’ is triggering my PTSD

    >”I’m sure this is a “computer error”… easy to correct.

‘Technical error’, that is such bullshit. This is pure profiteering. Boycott these hotels, they evidently have no regard for customer service, or indeed trading standards.

  8. We booked a flat in Liverpool for the eras tour and we were astounded by how cheap it was, two months up to the event and they cancelled on us, very suspicious
