I had to laugh when I saw the national dish price chart… If it’s English, its the most expensive (chips); next cheapest is Europe (pizza), finally the cheapest of the bunch Asia (India then China). Who needs outsourcing when we have takeaway pointing out how the world works in all other fields.

There are undoubtedly some amazing chippies still operating (the one nearest me cooks with beef tallow which is amazing – and has the 15+ deep queue every night to match) but let’s be brutally honest, the vast majority use cheap catering junk and they can’t make a batter to save their lives. Or care to even try..
In addition, Cod is vastly overrated and largely tasteless. Its the Turkey of the seas. People ate cod traditionally because it was cheap and plentiful. Not because it was good. These days you can get a *whole* 500g-1kg Tilapia for <£8 that will feed two very hungry adults all day long. Make your own beer batter etc.
I was always a huge fan of a “good” chippie tea but I haven’t had a good one in a long time and I ain’t paying £25 for two mediocre takeaways when I can cook up some Michelin Star (chippie tea equivalent) for half that.

Yet fish and chips is still easily the cheapest takeaway.
Far cheaper to feed 4 people with 2 large chips for £8 rather than spend £40 on Dominoes.
Their prices are going up mainly because the min wage has risen by 20% in 2 years along with their energy bills + rent and they have to pass those costs on.

We never buy it as a takeaway. It’s one of the only ones we don’t get. If the fish and chip shops delivered sure. Page’s are the only ones who do.

The so called ‘best chip shop in town’ here is ridiculous. If you want it delivered. 2 large fish and chips is £40!
We get ours from a less popular place but it’s much bigger portions and much much better value.
