> Men in England are facing a silent health crisis, dying nearly four years earlier than women with high rates of cancers, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and suicides.
> Stark inequalities mean men in deprived areas live almost 10 years less than their more affluent peers.
> The LGA also called for local suicide prevention funding to be reinstated. In England and Wales, suicide is the leading cause of death among men aged 20-34, and the suicide rate generally is three times higher for men than women.
Men are a whopping 3x more likely to commit suicide than women, particularly among young men.
My own younger brother took their life aged 20 with a drug overdose and it’s had a devastating impact on our family.
He struggled to get any support for his mental health issues when he came out as trans and unchallenged bullying eventually drove him the overdose route.
We need significantly more resources to help men before they reach their final hour of desperation.

>The charity argued the leading causes of death, such as lung cancer and heart disease, could be prevented by cutting out smoking, reducing alcohol intake, eating well and attending health screenings and other health appointments.
The thing that leads me to pessimistically expect this program to fail is that there is inevitably a lack of joined up thinking in terms of the underlying causes of these problems.
Poor people don’t smoke, drink and eat poorly because they are uneducated or not informed about the health implication but because these things make life bearable.
Orwell lambasted middle class liberals back in his day (1930s) for the way they failed to recognise that poor people eat white bread, chips and tea instead of raw carrots, orange juice and brown bread because life for poor people in this country is shit – you are belittled, harassed and demonised at every turn so fuck it, poor me a beer, light me a fag and pass the ketchup.
Want people to change their habits? Start by addressing the shitty nature of your social system. If society views me as a disposable piece of equipment, to be used up, worn out and eventually spat out, then why wouldn’t I treat myself like that?

We had a young apprentice, who saw nothing wrong with having McDonald’s for breakfast every day and then going to the cafe for a chip butty for lunch every day.
I think education is required about healthy eating

This is of course needed, let’s just hope Jess Phillips isn’t in charge.
