Global Japanese car sales dip amid weak Chinese demand Global sales by Japanese automakers were sluggish in June. That was mainly due to weak demand in China, the world’s largest car market.

Toyota says it sold about 850 thousand units worldwide, down 5.1 percent from a year earlier. Production stoppages for three of the company’s models were a factor.

Output was suspended after the carmaker was found to have falsified data used in official authentication tests.

Toyota saw its sales fall in China as many buyers switch from gasoline to electric vehicles. Other carmakers also had unimpressive results.

Honda, Nissan and Subaru saw their global sales decline, including in China. Japanese automakers are currently reviewing their strategies for the country.

Honda operates six plants in China that mainly produce gasoline-engine models.

The carmaker says it plans to close one factory in Guangdong Province in October. It will also halt production at a plant in Hubei Province in November.

Nissan stopped production in June at a plant in Jiangsu Province.
