  1. This was agreed in EU back before the Brexit vote.

Pretty sure it’ll be a seamless online process.

Annoying because many Brits will forget and endlessly complain when they arrive to the destination.

Pretty nice for people in the EU because now Brits with criminal records won’t be able to enter the EU.

  2. This headline is so fucking annoying. The EU has had this in the works for ages and is meant to make entry easier for all those that aren’t in the EU or Schengen agreement. If this wasn’t in place, Brits would have to get a visa to travel to the EU. Getting a visa can be very annoying and painful, I’ve had to wait for hours (including travel to a consulate) and fill out reams of paperwork for visas before, this process stops that AND is considerably cheaper.

Yes, Brexit is to blame, no this isn’t a ‘punishment’ as the headline implicitly implies.

  3. I’d pay 6 quid to watch a family kick off at the airport because they can’t fly to Benidorm because they didn’t know about it. Seems reasonable to me

  4. As someone married to a non EU national, I laugh and cry at the fact she had to spend thousands just to stay here and is paying hundreds just to prove to the EU that she isn’t an illegal immigrant using a holiday in Spain as a cover story.

Most people spend more than £6 on a pre flight pint in the airport.

  5. Just to be clear, this sort of thing isn’t a necessary part of a short-term entry system, it is just that Schengen have chosen to do it this way.

For example, Japan has a visa waiver for UK citizens that gives you up to 90 days without any particular formality (you just tell the person on entry). You do have to go to an immigration office if you want to get up to 6 months, but that’s quite generous.

Many other places offer/have offered visa waiver in that way.

I’m not saying that this should or should not be the case here, just that it isn’t quite as inherent in the system as some might think (“some” Americans who obviously have been operating an annoying system like this for some time)
