Warmer temperatures associated with climate change are encouraging citrus bacteria to adapt throughout the Mediterranean region. In Florida, citrus trees have been decimated in twenty years, and orange production has declined by more than 60 percent. Florida’s orange juice industry has lost more than $3 billion and nearly 50 percent of its jobs. Add to that the hurricanes of recent years, which have exacerbated the problem by causing fruit to fall from trees already weakened by disease.
