This is what a teacher should be; showing their students acceptance and kindness.

    > Minnesota Gov. and Vice President hopeful Tim Walz inspired generations of students during his time as a founder of the Gay-Straight Alliance at the Mankato West High School in Minnesota.

    > "Both Tim and Gwen were incredibly supportive of their gay students, and they modeled values of inclusivity and respect," Reitan told MSNBC. "I was bullied in high school. helped not just me, but it also, I think, helped the bully. It showed the bully a better path forward, and I can think of no one better than Tim Walz to show that better path forward for America.”

    > While introducing Walz as her running mate to a rally audience of 14,000 in Philadelphia last Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris noted that, while working as a high school teacher and football coach back in 1999, Walz advised the school's first GSA to help LGBTQ+ students, she said.

  4. Maybe if JD Vance had a teacher like Walz, he would’ve come out as gay, lived an authentic life, and not be the woman-hating “straight” man that he is today. I truly think he resents that he was forced to live a traditional (wife and kids) life and despises anyone who gets to happily live a life other than that. Hence his attack on “single cat ladies” and saying people with children should have more of a voice in this country. I think he’s living a lie and it’s turned him into a total asshole.

    > “I couldn’t call him ‘Gov. Walz,’ because he will forever be ‘Mr. Walz.’ He’s genuinely the teacher that was in the hallway greeting every kid every morning, giving high fives and fist bumps,” she continued. “He knew what was going on and what was happening within the school. He was ingrained in the fabric of it.”

    > Another student, Emily Scott, talked about the ways in which Walz inspired her on a trip to China. “We were on a river boat cruise in Guilin, and I turned to Mr. Walz, and I said, ‘I love this. I love China. I want to do this for the rest of my life.’”

    > “And then he set up the next 10 years of my life. He said, ‘Emily, here’s what you’re going to do. You’re going to go to University of Wisconsin at Madison and major in Chinese, and then you’re going to go to China and get a job,’ and that is exactly what I did for the next 10 years of my life.”

  6. I remember when people said he’s just another old white guy when they first picked him and he’s since proven to be so much more.

This just underscores the difference a single teacher can make with students. Being a teen is hard enough, being a queer teen is that much harder.

The diversity of students who speak highly of him tells you the kind of teacher he was, and the impact he had on his students.

Contrast that to the weird VP candidate who is incredibly divisive, belittles people and wants to take away the rights of many.

  8. Cool and all, but what did he do to help the persecuted white male Christians? Checkmate polygamists.

  9. Ironically – JD the anti LGBTQ+ AND anti independent women was planted by Peter Thiel the rich gay dude.

  10. As a closeted high schooler (football player) in the 90’s this type of courage and leadership from a football coach would have absolutely changed my life.

In my experience, the very worst thing you could be called by a guy in charge was “gay” and that shit stuck with me for a long time.

Taking away all of the sensationalist propaganda from both sides (and I read both sides with a cautious eye), Walz really seems like he’s just trying to be a good dude. I’ll flatly state that I don’t agree with *some* of the stuff he stands for, but I can’t deny him being someone I’d *trust* in a position with as much power as VP.

I can’t say nearly the same for the other side, though, which is full of blatant homophobia, racism, and grift in this election cycle. I wouldn’t vote for Trump even if he very suddenly and publicly aligned with every one of my views for whatever reason. I can’t trust that he doesn’t see the US as an extension of Trump Corp, and that Vance isn’t playing to the pay-off.

  12. One of the important things to also realize is he did this back in the 90s, and as a football coach and active duty service member. He approached acceptance from two strongholds of toxic masculinity.
