Authorities in Japan are warning of dangerously high temperatures on Saturday in the Kanto and Tokai regions.
The Meteorological Agency and the Environment Ministry have issued heatstroke alerts for 28 of the country’s 47 prefectures.
Meteorological Agency officials say a high-pressure system will see the mercury rise in eastern and western Japan. They say temperatures will be pushed higher by warm air flowing into Typhoon Ampil.
The agency expects daytime highs will reach 39 degrees Celsius in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture; and 38 degrees in the cities of Nagoya, Hamamatsu, Saitama and Maebashi.
Temperatures will likely reach 37 degrees in the cities of Kumamoto, Hiroshima, Gifu, Kofu and elsewhere.
Many people have been taken to hospital with suspected heatstroke symptoms this summer. Some cases have been fatal.
People are advised to stay indoors, use air conditioners, consume adequate water and salt, and refrain from outings and exercise.
Senior citizens, babies and younger children are especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
