With a declining birth rate and increasing cost of living pressures, this is a good policy. Plus, things like this have been in place for a very long time in other countries.

Oh look at that- an actual policy to help people with children! Republicans couldn’t deliver a policy this if their lives depended on it, all they have are insults.

I think I’d prefer to see physical items the way some countries do. Boxes full of important, concrete items to give babies a solid start in life right at the beginning, rather than waiting for tax season. Either at hospitals or by supplying them to an organization like WIC for distribution. But even as someone who can’t have kids and thinks the human race could do with a reduction in size, I’m down.

This sounds very pro family and pro birth to me. Can’t wait for the right to attack it.

$6,000 should help pay off the medical bills…
(I know she can’t simply say that childbirth expenses should be covered by the government… as that would have the shrieking idiots screaming “COMMUNISM!!!” within milliseconds.

Nothing “populist” about any of this. Good work as always WaPo.

>The most striking proposals were for the elimination of medical debt for millions of Americans; the “first-ever” ban on price gouging for groceries and food; a cap on prescription drug costs; a $25,000 subsidy for first-time homebuyers; and a Child Tax Credit that would provide $6,000 per child to families for the first year of a baby’s life.

>On housing, Harris did less to break with the Biden administration but still opted for a more active set of federal proposals than those thus far endorsed by the White House. Harris endorsed a slew of measures to expand housing supply — including an expansion of tax credits to incentivize housing construction — but also a new $25,000 in federal down-payment assistance to more than 1 million first-time home buyers. (Biden had previously proposed a more limited measure only for first-generation home buyers.)
Something a lot of people will miss due to the paywall.

We had something similar in Australia when my son was born (the liberal party – who are in no way liberal – killed it not long after I had my son) it was 5k and the spread the payment out over a few weeks and it was extremely helpful as a new parent who’s kid couldn’t latch and was sick on normal formula and we had to spend untold amounts to find the best way to feed him. It also helped with a much larger than normal power bill we had that following quarter from trying to regulate the house temp and all the extra drying of the mountains of laundry and infant seems to produce.
I would imagine this would really ease the burden in America when expecting because of crappy employment benefits for a large majority and enable some parents to stay home just that little bit longer with their brand new baby.

Why not instead of giving 6.000 USD, make all healthcare for anyone below 18 free by law and then give 3.000 USD to each newborn?

That’s $6,000 less going into the pockets of the rich who don’t pay taxes, get bail outs and get subsidies!!
