  1. For those who don’t know, John Yoo wrote the so called “torture memos” that the Bush administration used to justify torture.

All of these stories that are coming out in the last few days saying Judge Merchan will send him to jail “immediately” are from right-wing pundits who are making politically motivated attacks on his neutrality

It only happens with around 10% of this kind of conviction, so the odds have got to be lower for Trump. And even if he was sentenced to prison, no one at all think would be forced to stay imprison during his appeal.

  4. I would prefer it if they deny him martyrdom and just jail him after the election.

All it would do now is to entrench his lackeys and possible make them find someone else who would be more palatable despite holding the same destructive beliefs.

  5. Sounds like John Yoo is trying to mobilize the weirdo right wing nutjobs and accelerate some political violence. How about we put that guy in jail.

“Could be” and “will be” are about 1000 miles apart. There is no way he will be put in jail in the final couple of months of the election.

  7. ‘This judge has used his discretion everytime to move this case in a political direction’.

I didn’t realize upholding the law was political. Thanks professor.

Donald Trump is a 78 year-old, first offender in clear mental decline. The odds that he will receive a custodial sentence for a crime like this is very low.

I expect he’ll get probation, which would be actually be quite funny. Imagine Turmp meeting with his parole officer once a month. Also, Mechan could impose impose some interesting amusing porbation conditions on him.

  9. What a crock. DT has been found in contempt of court, what, 10 times now? Any ordinary defendant would have been locked up long ago.

  10. The most severe sentence would be house arrest at mar-a-Lago. He could still campaign, via BS “press conferences” and would still have complete SS protection. Well within reasonable guidelines.

  11. As well he should. Committed 34 felonies, showed zero remorse, made a mockery of the justice system and violated a gag order 10 times. I’m pretty sure a sentence near the maximum would be very reasonable according to sentencing guidelines.

He did just state that he’ll flee to Venezuela. I’m sure judges love it when convicted felons brag about skipping town.

  13. But won’t be. 🤷

It is *very* unlikely that a federal white-collar first offender would be incarcerated pending appeal. Even if he loses in 2024, Trump will not see jail time until 2026-7, if at all.

Alternate title: Trump Could Be ‘Sent to Jail Immediately’ by Judge Merchan, but won’t. But we could use the clicks, so here’s another nothingburger story.

  15. Kamala needs to be like “good luck with your sentencing next week” at the debate in September..

  16. Trump has publicly (if not repeatedly) declared his intent to flee the country if he loses the election (the latest destination being Venezuela). That makes him a FLIGHT RISK by every legal definition of the term. As such, not only should he be placed into immediate custody but he should be given ZERO bail and sentenced to serve his time without the benefit of ‘awaiting appeal’. A flight risk is a flight risk, full stop. Show me ONE “common criminal” who wouldn’t be immediately thrown behind bars if they were so flagrantly declaring their intention to flee – at least one who isn’t wealthy or politically connected – and I’ll be gobsmacked!

The news has been honey dicking us about Trump going to jail for *8 years* now. Either report when he’s actually in cuffs or shut up.

I’m not a single-issue voter, but if I had to be one this November, I’d be voting solely on the idea that a vote against him means I personally get to send a “billionaire” convicted felon and Epstein butt-buddy to prison.

    I like that idea.

  19. Split the difference. Jail time with suspended sentence, along with probation.

He’ll have time to lose the election without saying he was hindered because he was in jail. Once the election is over we all know he’ll violate the terms of his probation. Off to prison he goes.

On the positive side, he’ll have a good excuse for not attending. Harris’s inauguration.

Surely he can’t live that much longer. He is obese and lives off fast food and soda. Lucky to make 80 I reckon

That’s never going to happen. Let’s just destroy the fascist at the ballot box. Then his fat ass can flee to Venezuela. Not sure if he’s aware we have an extradition policy with them. Hopefully we’ll just leave him there. Maybe his cult members will follow.

  22. Without regard to my screenname Trump should be remanded to jail immediately. Trump used every opportunity to attack the Judge, DA Alvin Bragg, the Judges daughter and anyone else who dared oppose him. Trump was cited over 10 times for violating his gag order and was told that those violations would be included if he was found guilty in his sentence. Well, here we are. Thirty-four guilty verdicts later. There are no options. Sentence him to jail and let Clarence Thomas embarrass himself again by ruling illogically for Trump.

We have to restore sanity to our country.

ANY OTHER citizen found with that many classified documents at their private residents, where foreign agents are known to lobby, would be detained indefinitely without trial under the patriot act…

That’s not an exaggeration. Anyone with clearance and access to the same docs knows this is true

They are such a shitty rag that only pushes clickbait headlines.
