A fireworks festival was held in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, in northern Japan on Wednesday night.
A major seasonal attraction, Yamagata Summer Fireworks has been held every year on August 14 since 1980.
On Wednesday, families and other spectators, some wearing yukata, gathered at a local park.
They cheered and took photos as fireworks began lighting up the sky shortly past 7 p.m.
On the theme of “Family,” a total of about 10,000 fireworks were launched this year. Organizers said they hoped people will enjoy the event with their loved ones and make it a supreme summer memory.
A 31-year-old resident of Sakata City, also in the prefecture, said he came because his hometown’s event was cancelled due to record heavy rain last month.
Visiting with his family, he said fireworks festivals provide good summer memories for families. He added that he hopes that Yamagata’s event will lead to positive developments, including reconstruction from natural disasters.
