Japan has decided to provide grant aid to Palestine through an international organization with the aim of alleviating its worsening food situation.
The Foreign Ministry says the government will extend the assistance worth 400 million yen, or about 2.68 million dollars, through the World Food Programme. It says the decision comes at the request of the Palestinian Authority.
The ministry says Palestine’s food situation is deteriorating due partly to soaring global prices resulting from the crisis in Ukraine.
It says the entire population of the Gaza Strip has been facing a food crisis, particularly since conflict erupted between Israel and Palestinian militants on October 7 last year.
The ministry adds that the assistance is expected to contribute to “the stability and improvement of public welfare based on human security.” It says the concept forms one of the pillars of Japan’s basic aid policy toward Palestine.
