I saw in a post shared here recently that former AKP MP Ahmet Hamdi Çamlı, nicknamed Yeliz, graduated from Newport University. I was curious and wanted to research where this university was and what it did because as someone interested in academia, I had never even heard of it before. When I did a simple search on the internet, I saw that this university operates with a ridiculous system such as opening an office in Turkey and issuing diplomas from America via distance education, and that it is an institution that has not been given equivalence by the YÖK, that is, has not been accepted, and is not recognized. I even saw that an institution claiming to be a newspaper called Yeni Şafak advertised this university in 2006. Later I learned that another AKP MP, Cemil Yaman, was also a graduate of Newport University, and according to the information obtained by the journalist Tanzer Ünal, who was the owner of the news on the news site where I learned this information, Cemil Yaman’s CV was changed many times on the internet and Newport University was deleted from his CV. It was only written that he did his master’s degree at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University, while his undergraduate education was never mentioned. Again, according to this journalist, the fact that a graduate of an institution that is not equivalenced by YÖK can be considered a bachelor’s degree graduate and do a master’s degree in Turkey is another question mark. In short, this institution, as you can see, has turned some of our selected uncles with almond moustaches into educated gentlemen who graduated from great universities with fake diplomas. What will happen to the young people who are exposed to excruciating exam stress and are even on the verge of suicide because of this, in order to improve their own future a little? What will happen to the young people who got into the best universities in Turkey, worked hard for years with the best GPAs, but couldn’t even find an internship because they weren’t Imam Hatip graduates or didn’t have any AKP acquaintances? What will happen to the young people who got the highest scores but were eliminated by a fraudulent method called interviews and couldn’t reach their dreams? And the most important question: Who will be held accountable for these?
