Hello, I picked this up in Kusadasi for my arm. The sellers said it was 100% silk and handmade. 8×8 turkish double knots? It was a kinda heat of the moment purchase, was just wondering if it looks legit and if there were any meanings behind the pattern. Also does anyone know the origin/weavery family who made this?

The store had told me the makers dont make them anymore. I didnt think much about it until today when I read lots of places shut down over the years (IMO sad because handmade turkish rugs always seemed interesting), I guess they maybe shut down as well. I was going to email them asking for more info but Im still iffy if I got scammed hard lol

  1. This prayer rug looks overused. The colors on one side are completely faded.

I don’t know how much you paid this, but it should have a label describing features of it on its back. Is that the label in the top right of this photo? I can’t read it because of the poor resolution of this photo.

For examples related to motifs, take a look at this article (google translate of a Turkish site, sorry!): [https://popartistic-com.translate.goog/turk-kilim-ve-halilari-motifler-ve-anlamlari/?_x_tr_sl=tr&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=tr&_x_tr_pto=wapp](https://popartistic-com.translate.goog/turk-kilim-ve-halilari-motifler-ve-anlamlari/?_x_tr_sl=tr&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=tr&_x_tr_pto=wapp)

  2. if you cant identify silk by yourself then you shouldnt buy silk products.

this looks faded. probably from being in display for too long. it’s not old. usually partial color difference indicates to root paint but this thing faded altogether.

you can figure out the handmadedness by looking at the knots in the back. if they are full of mistakes and unevenness then it could be hand made. from what i can see, the patterns look too template to be chosen for hand knitting.

Very hard to say from the pic. Look for little imperfections to understand if it’s handmade. Or you need to take it to a rug store in your town.

Flower motifs on the bottom looks uneven so despite what everybody claims as fake the rug may be handmade

  5. It is very difficult to tell from the picture. It does have a nice sheen like a silk rug would. The tassels look to be fine thin threads. What does the back of it look like? Can you actually count the knots per inch or is it so finely woven that it would be difficult to count. A good quality silk rug would feel light for its size. Lots of things to think about before making a determination if it is hand made or machine made. If it is made from silk or silk blend or polyester thread. If it really bothers you, you can take it to a local appraiser and ask for their opinion.

If you really like the rug and are enjoying your souvenir from your trip then does it really matter? I think it is beautiful. Hang it on your wall or put it somewhere you can enjoy it.

Edit: silk rugs have a nap, meaning you can run your hand in one direction and the rug will look shiny, go in the opposite direction and it will look more dull. That could explain the shading visible in the picture. Think of it like going with the grain.
