Hababam Failed the Class… Every time I watch this movie, I feel both happiness and indescribable sadness. This 1975 classic is like a friend from my childhood. In every scene, it reminds me of how innocent we used to be, and perhaps how carefree our days were.
The film is full of the most adorable mischievous characters of that period: Stubby Necmi, Cow Şaban, Damat Ferit… They all remind us of our school pranks, the days of youth that we thought would never end. But on the other hand, this film reminds us of how fast time flies and how those days will never come back.
Mahmut Hoca’s seemingly harsh but actually loving attitudes make us think about the efforts our teachers put in to make us men. Those attitudes that we didn’t understand at the time, and maybe even got angry at, seem so meaningful now, don’t they? But that class, that sweet mischief, unfortunately only remained on the silver screen.
I always feel a sigh when I watch this movie. I both laugh and feel a slight ache inside me. Because the joy of Hababam Sınıfı deepens our longing for our past. It makes us feel like we never grew up, but at the same time, it painfully reminds us that childhood is now just a memory.
That’s why watching Hababam Sınıfı is like meeting old friends and reminiscing about the old days. There is always a joy in it, but that joy comes with a sadness mixed with time. And this sadness shows once again why the film is so special, why it remains unforgettable even after years.
