Spoiler, I didn’t read the paper. But I don’t understand how the two closest super massive BH in 1.5 million light years wouldn’t be coming towards each other.

It’s fucking inevitable. These are the two largest galaxies in the local group. Even if they miss (which they won’t), they’ll come around again with less energy relative to each other and come together then. This is how ellipticals form.
