You can (and by many models should) close understaffed, underresourced regional hospitals. But when you do that, you need to properly expand the services of the main urban centers so that they can properly accommodate the increased load, both from traffic infrastructure to patient flow and outpatient services.
Clearly no one thought of any of this. So we’re stuck with either our current model which is limping along to a slow painful death or transitioning to what should be the better model but won’t be because no one has a mind to do it properly.
The HSE is a fucking joke and everyone involved should be fired.

I’m trying to understand here, there were a lot of people on here saying that closing regional hospital A&E’s was a good thing and we should be centralising it.
But so far it seems to be an absolute disaster, help me understand what was the logic here?

Just to think of all the people who have died here, either unnecessarily, or prematurely. It’s quite frightening stuff. We ought to all let that settle in and ask is it acceptable.
I’m personally afraid we are so densensitised to it. A chunk of these people are of a lower to upper-lower socioeconomic status, or at best there’s an odd few in the middle. As a result there’s frankly little thought of it in public officialdom, and that’s the truth I’m afraid. You are talking a low power group versus the might of the State and all their machinery.
Now look, I’m not saying the public servants are unfeeling, or cruel. It’s more so to do with accountability. The same story has been told over and over again in Ireland. We have the copyright on covering your arse, sweeping it under the carpet until you get your lump sum and pension, and blaming someone else.
But it’s not one bit funny when it comes to your door.

What are the highly paid managers doing in the HSE? This was completely avoidable, it all boils down to no accountability for these people making stupid decisions and being allowed stay in jobs they are very obviously not qualified to do.
