Japanese gymnast Oka Shinnosuke has won his third gold medal at the Paris Olympics, with a spectacular performance on the horizontal bar.
Oka — who already helped Japan win the team gold and earned the individual all-around gold medal — followed up with another gold in the individual horizontal bar final on Monday. This came hours after the 20-year-old athlete took bronze in the parallel bars.
Oka, who ended the preliminary round in fifth place, pulled off high-level maneuvers almost flawlessly and made a perfect landing, earning him a score of 14.533.
This made him the first Japanese gymnast in over five decades to win three gold medals at one Olympics, joining Kato Sawao, who achieved the feat at the Munich Olympics in 1972.
The silver medal went to Colombia’s Angel Barajas. China’s Zhang Boheng and Taiwan’s Tang Chia-hung shared the bronze.
