Gold and bronze. Disappointed but to be honest we’d have taken that if we were offered it a week ago. The fact that we are disappointed shows how good a week it has been for Ireland.

  2. The commentators and pundits should be sacked. A completely cringeworthy and arrogant build up saying he’d smash the world record and no one else had a chance.

The commentator said the American had no chance at halfway and he ended up breaking the world record. Completely embarrassing stuff.

We now have 7 medals at the Olympics for the first time ever (includes Kellie’s medal)

  4. Great achievement for the young man, well done indeed! I wonder what happened to him, he was adamant he was going for the record but seemed to be quite timid in the lather half. Blew his beans too early perhaps?

  5. Chell_the_assassin on

Knew we were fucked when the RTÉ commentators kept saying he’d win comfortably lol

    American here…..

Been supporting the Irish all week.. I’ve seen all your golds live and two of the bronze medals. I’ve never been so sad to see my country win a gold or set a world record.

I’ll be at your gold medal boxing match so fingers crossed I get to hear Amhrán na bhFiann once more.

Edit: Not relevant to the Irish necessarily but we just lost men’s 4x100m medley relay after having won gold the first 16 times we tried. Expected to have one gold through 3 swims tonight, but not like this 😞

  7. You know what is nice.

A sense of disappointment for a bronze. Future looks bright.

RTE was embarrassing with its arrogance

“Daniel showing his intent, his hands in a W for World Record!”

W for Wiffen, W for Winner, W for Wumbo???

  9. compulsive_tremolo on

Absolutely embarrassing from RTE and the general media to consider Wiffen taking the gold as a foregone conclusion , despite the caliber of competition on-deck.

Hope the commentators have learned some humility , they made complete fucking fools of themselves.

Hard luck he missed on the gold but we’d have taken a gold and a bronze before the Olympics. Restored our reputation in swimming which wasn’t in a great state.

  11. Everyone was convinced Wiffin would get gold, don’t think many expected that absolute insane swim from Bobby Finke, fair play to Wiffin another medal in the bagb

  12. Great interview, really talented likable and humble fella .

    Shame about the associated punditry

  13. Seems the .American did just enough in the qualifier to get through and saved a fair bit for the final. Think Wiffen had tough races all week and just didn’t have the extra to finish it off.. Still two medals in one Olympics from one athlete is some going.

  14. Wiffen was 5s off his PB, having set a PB in the 800. Great effort to bring home two medals. I wonder does he still fancy a bit of e-coli in the 10000m open water

  15. It says a lot that we’re (and Daniel) disappointed with bronze

Fantastic achievement even if he just wasn’t quite on it today, there’ll be other times to make up for it

If I’m honest I’m still pinching myself at these games, I didn’t think we’d see the likes of Tokyo again but this has been outstanding.

Still a lot of Irish performances to come and even a couple of medal chances.

And to think we were so close on a few others.

This has been great, thanks Team Ireland

I still think it was an amazing swin still. To be disappointed with Bronze, who’d thought we’d ever be disapponted with getting bronze in one of the big races in swimming.

  17. What a performance by Bobby Zinke all the same.

    RTEs commentators haven’t a breeze.

  18. No catching Fink today, fuck me he could move!

Still on the podium, that’s the main thing!

  19. Bright-Working7478 on

It’s absolutely amazing he won bronze, the commentators were so unfair, pretty much slating him for not winning a gold. Fair play to Wiffen, amazing talent, dedication, and hard work!

Hey will earn from it. He’s only 23.
He probably expended a lot of emotional energy before the race.

  21. Didn’t realise he’s in the 10k as well. Any idea if he’d be a podium favorite for that?

  22. summerdot123 on

He only just turned 23 and he has already won two Olympic medals. He has really done himself proud. I am looking forward to watching him compete in the 10KM Seine swim.

Bottler, was talking about gold medal and world record and then was getting chased down for 3rd a mile off the lead.

It’s been a few days and he’s already too big for his boots.

Congratulations to Daniel. It’s great to see an Irish person exude confidence in their ability and not be afraid to embrace speaking about wanting success.

His post race interview was very good too. No excuses, just honesty. He has every right to be happy and proud of his performances.

The commentators, and their dismissal of the other swimmers was embarrassing throughout the race.

  25. FracturedButWhole18 on

Delighted for him. Gold and bronze is a fantastic achievement. Only a young lad so more to come from him!

  26. BBC express their disappointed that Irelands Daniel Wiffen could only manage bronze after the Northern Irishman won gold earlier in the week.

  27. Brine-O-Driscoll on

Didn’t even know who Wiffen was a month ago, so it would be mad to be disappointed at that bronze.

Only 23 and one of Ireland’s greatest Olympians already with more to come.

  28. Wonderful_Flower_751 on

It says a lot that we’re all disappointed by a bronze medal but it just shows how incredible these Olympics have been so far for us.

Still it’s nothing to be sniffed at and Wiffen can be very proud of himself 🥇🥉
