The problem is that for whatever reason, it is still illegal

This is true. I’m not sure how you “emotionally” legalise something. It genuinely takes a smidge of critical thinking to put the bill together

If it is legalised it still needs to be regulated. As the article highlights it’s basically impossible to walk around town without getting the stench of weed. As someone who doesn’t smoke it is as disgusting to me as cigarettes. I would be in a favour of a legalisation of drugs overall, though we must endeavour to have proper support for people who suffer from addiction. If you were to legalise drugs you would take significant power away from the gangs whilst overall increasing the safety of drug use in this country (and people will inevitably use drugs regardless). Legalisation whilst maintaining societal standards seems to be the way forward. You don’t want a situation like Vancouver.

Went into that article with my haunches up, but actually it’s very fair
I love weed, I love the smell of weed. I know that that isn’t the case for lots of people.
It is a very particular and strong smell, there’s no denying that. We can’t be upset with people who are offended by the smell.
I made the rule we only smoke weed in the house here, not outside, as I don’t want to impose my habits on my neighbours
However, plenty of people don’t have that option. And they don’t have designated spaces where smoking can be be done without affecting others
Get coffee shops in to fuck already!

My sense of smell is weirdly sensitive (I get headaches from perfumes and things) and the smell of weed does make any area unpleasant for me to spend time in. I’m all for legalisation and if it meant there were designated areas for smoking that would make the city centre and parks in the area so much better for me.

Alcohol is the WHOs number one cause of preventable death, being implicated in 8 types of cancer. It kills millions globally every single year. Just 1 beer a week raises the risk of breast or testicular cancer 15% higher than a non drinker. On professor David Nutt’s harm index it was ranked highest for negative impact by users on non users. My uncle gets wasted and then beats his wife with a few drinks in him. 30% of all sexual assaults and 70% of those in uni involve booze.
But weed smells bad 😱😱😱

Weed smells nice.. legalise

Every other country in the western hemisphere seems to be legalising it.
Even in the uk medicinal weed is becoming common and coffeeshops/social clubs are popping up in bigger cities
Maybe the issue here isnt that people have no respect for dublin, but that people have no respect for the law and see it more and more as prohibition rather than weed being a danger to society
MastodonNo8616 on
I’d love to see it legalised for personal use and not in a way that makes it a money making opportunity for the govt.
Grow your own, smoke your own, share with friends. ‘Coffee shops’ def a good way to go also.

At this stage, I wouldn’t even be sharing anything from the likes of Newstalk about Cannabis.
It’s actually just harming legalisation and creating debate where there shouldn’t be debate. We don’t have media outlets debating the smell of puke, piss and shite everywhere from the consumption of alcohol.
Never mind the thousands of people who die a year from the consumption of alcohol. Whether it be from medical issues, drink driving or assault while drunk etc.
Newstalk have one role in society and that’s to be inflammatory. Whether it be about drugs or immigration or anything else, they are there solely to divide and enrage the public and really shouldn’t be allowed as a source on this sub all things considered.

Please, you Irish, don’t make the same mistake that the Germans do.
The Germans drink like madmen, but the legalisation of cannabis is the devil’s work.
In Germany, those who have never even taken a puff on a joint in their lives are against legalisation. The political conservatives deliberately tell lies so as not to change anything. Especially when it comes to the comparison between cannabis and alcohol, this group reacts very emotionally.
Please, discuss rational and not emotional.

Fag smoke smells worse than weed, not to mention the human waste left on the streets. Stopped by an archway once, the ammonia smell of decades of stale piss nearly knocked me out.
There’s far worse problems on the streets than someone smoking a joint.

That seems to be a conversation to have after legalisation.
There’s no point talking about regulating where/how people can partake in an illegal activity.
Makes about as much sense as debating designated spaces for knife crime.
Original-Salt9990 on
Just legalise it, tax it, regulate it and move on to more pressing issues.
I’d be in favour of basically treating it exactly like cigarettes. Same age restrictions, same purchasing, advertising and display restrictions, and fine anyone who litters while doing it or smokes within a few meters of a doorway or indoors etc.
Done…… next problem.

A clear point to make is this is happening while it’s illegal. The government and guards are not capable of stopping people from smuggling it in or growing it themselves. Their efforts have been a failure. I don’t smoke anymore but I can still get it easily.
So what are we trying to do . Are we trying to remove it from our society. Are we making a token effort to look like we are doing something when in reality we are doing fuck all .
A huge problem with it being illegal is you get it from someone willing to break the law to deal. This means they often offer a lot more . Weed, MDMA ,gear , research chemicals. So for a young person trying out stuff it’s an easier step up from the same source.
Legislation at least allows us to operate in a harm reduction way . We know people are going to . As a teenager it was way easier to get weed than drink . But if we added controls it would make it harder . No ids you for illegal drugs .

I can’t go for a night stroll in town without avoidin footpaths and walking on the roads due to the hundreds of folks standing around faux barrels smoking rollies and drinking pints. Nothing wrong with it in my mind at all but i guess in like with this article, I’ve surely a right to complain?

I occasionally get a strong smell of weed on the train. It’s hard to identify who it’s from but it’s not pleasant. It’s like sitting near someone who smells like they haven’t washed in a month.

I can agree on the smell point, but smell would not be an issue if we had legal access to legal vapes, majority of people using weed are right to not be using dodgy vapes with god knows what’s actually in the liquid.

We need some form of legislation that will take the money out of the criminal gangs pockets and the taxis made can be put towards the HSE.

at this stage you may as well decriminalize it cause there’s essentially 0 enforcement on the weed ban law
plus let’s be honest pretty much any anti weed argument you could make can be copy pasted to Tobacco which is legal
