Kishida asks panel to study measures, laws to deal with AI risk Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio instructed a panel of experts on Friday to study what measures or laws may be needed to deal with risks linked to generative AI.

Kishida stressed that it is essential to ensure the safety of artificial technology to promote its further development and use.

Kishida said: “Discussions on such safety measures, including whether laws will be required or not, have just started. Japan is a leading voice in this discussion and the world is paying attention to what kind of system we create.”

He said the measures should reflect four principles. They should be innovation-friendly and flexible enough to respond to changes in technology and business environments.

He added they should comply with international guidelines and allow the government to procure and use AI appropriately.

The panel is expected to come up with its recommendations later this year.
