South Korea has named Park Cheol-hee, the head of a government diplomatic think tank, as its new ambassador to Japan.
South Korea’s presidential office announced on Wednesday that Park, a well-known Japan scholar, will replace the current ambassador Yun Duk-min.
Park is 61 years old. He has been involved in the study of Japanese politics at Seoul National University and elsewhere, and is known as an expert on Japan’s political circles.
He was a member of the delegation sent to Japan by Yoon Suk-yeol in 2022, before Yoon’s inauguration as president.
Park is currently head of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, a think tank under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The presidential office expressed hope that Park will contribute to forging a future-oriented relationship between South Korea and Japan, based on the expertise he has accumulated and networks he has built.
Japan and South Korea will mark 60 years of diplomatic relations next year.
