Monsoon rains trigger landslides in India, killing at least 45 people At least 45 people have been killed in massive landslides triggered by torrential rains in southern India.

Authorities in the state of Kerala said a series of landslides struck several mountainous regions through early Tuesday morning.

Footage shows muddy streams gushing through the streets and workers clearing wood and debris.

Local media reports say many people are trapped inside collapsed houses, and that some villages remain isolated. Emergency workers and police officers are conducting rescue operations.

Torrential downpours often cause death and destruction during the monsoon season in India. More than 50 people were killed in landslides and floods in the mountainous northern state of Himachal Pradesh in August last year.
