The vice foreign ministers of Japan and China have held a strategic dialogue for the first time since January 2020. They affirmed their commitment to comprehensively promoting a “mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests.”
Japan’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Okano Masataka met with China’s Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu in Tokyo on Monday.
Okano conveyed Japan’s stance on pending issues, such as the release of treated and diluted water from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean.
He also spoke on the situation in the East China Sea, including the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture and the early release of Japanese nationals being detained in China.
The ministers also exchanged views on the Russian invasion in Ukraine, North Korea’s nuclear and missile development and other regional issues.
They confirmed they will promote their “mutually beneficial relationship” and work together to build constructive and stable bilateral relations.
