Official Baku says that Pashinyan refused to meet with Aliyev

Azerbaijan claims that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan refused to meet with President Ilham Aliyev in London.

Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan Hikmat Hajiyev told journalists about this on July 18. According to him, the British side proposed to hold the meeting:

“However, no party has officially announced the possibility of such a meeting before.”

“Rejection of the meeting by the Prime Minister of Armenia is a withdrawal from the peace agenda,” Hajiyev added.

However, Ani Badalyan, an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, denied what Hikmet Hajiyev said and took the opposite position.

According to him, they offered to hold a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, but Baku refused.

However, Ani Badalyan added that he approved the proposal to intensify the negotiations at a high level and achieve the signing of the peace agreement within a month.

The Armenian service of “Azadlig” radio writes that the fourth summit of the European Political Union has started in London, and Pashinyan and Aliyev are also participating:

“When he came to Blenheim Palace, the Prime Minister of Armenia did not answer the journalists’ question about how the negotiations on the peace agreement were going. The President of Azerbaijan raised his thumb.”

The summit of the European Political Union, created by the Council of Europe in 2022 after Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, held 3 meetings. Within the framework of the summit, a meeting between Pashinyan and Aliyev took place twice.

The first meeting took place in Prague in 2022, when the parties declared that they recognized each other’s territorial integrity within the framework of the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration.

Pashinyan and Aliyev met for the second time in June 2023 in Kishnau.

Ilham Aliyev boycotted the meeting held in Granada last October.
