  1. That’s actually pretty bad considering he was nearly killed a couple days before. Even I was tempted In watching even though I’ve never watched before

  2. The 2016 convention had drama.

Trump’s takeover of the party is so complete that at this point, it’s like sitting in on a MLM presentation.

“The first night of the Republican National Convention (RNC) drew 18.13 million viewers Monday night, up slightly from 2020, but down 21% from 2016, according to Nielsen.”

Up slightly from 2020 is more important imo. 2016 can be explained by non-republican watching due to the novelty of Trump or maybe streaming online instead of cable, etc…

  4. this would be an unremarkable number, a decline we would expect from this low enthusiasm election between two broadly unlikable presidents.

but, given that this immediately followed an assassination attempt… it’s safe to say enthusiasm is greatly lower than it appeared even a week ago.

  5. Given how much trump loves to brag about his Apprentice ratings, this is the sort of thing that could get under his skin.

They are like: tonight we are going to start with lots of lies and scare tactic. We know our base is gullible enough to keep falling for it. But seriously thankful at least a few republicans are like: I will never vote for Trump again.

If I want to watch bat-shit crazy people making really stupid decisions, I can just watch “Love After Lockup,” or some other trash tv.

  8. This entire election is a stale rerun. Voters overwhelmingly say they would be interested in watching a completely different show.

I think for 2016 some people genuinely believed the populist BS that he was spouting and thought he was going to make their lives better so they were interested. Now aside from his MAGA fanatics I think people realise it’s all a con and they don’t really care as much.

  10. 8 years ago is a big difference in terms of access to media. I don’t watch main news anymore. I watch clips and breakdowns on YouTube

I keep saying it, people are tired of Trump’s act and the new voters he brought out aren’t as motivated as they were four years ago. If we all get out and vote Trump will lose bigley.

2024 has been so fucking wild. I want off Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.

I figured after the events of last week, Trump would get a boost. Instead it’s just gotten worse, and his VP pick is insane even for MAGA cultists.

And Biden might be signaling he is stepping down, potentially.

The ups and downs would be laughed off if this was a TV show—people would complain it was “unrealistic”. The Onion was eaten and then spit out.

Reality has been broken since 2016, but now we are just reaching an extreme parody of a banned Simpson’s episode knockoff.

Idk how to feel anymore lol. Idk if this is good or bad or whatever—I’m so nervous for November.

  13. Guess we Americans feel like, if we want to watch days of a Cult hocking hate and violence, we can just YouTube a Charles Manson, Jim Jones etc. documentary.

  14. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.axios.com/2024/07/17/rnc-night-one-ratings-down-trump-first-appearance) reduced by 51%. (I’m a bot)

    > Roughly 17 million people watched the first night of the Republican National Convention on television during the primary speech hours between 10 p.m.-11 p.m. EST Monday night, according to Nielsen ratings.

    > Why it matters: That's down more than 26% from the number of TV viewers for the first night of the 2016 RNC. It's also 13% lower than the number of TV viewers who watched the first night of the Democratic National Convention last week.

    > The big picture: TV ratings for the RNC were down about 21% on average this year across all four nights compared to 2016.

Well, to be honest, if you looked at the crowd that attended … that was one funky looking group of people .. Trump probably was like these are my people? lol

I’m telling you folks, remember this, the abortion thing has killed them.

You’ll see in November. This isn’t the 1930s.

It’s much bigger than you think.

Odd they used 2016 for some reason rather than the 2020 one.

2020 was 26% down from 2016 and 2024 was only down 21% compared to the same number. (USA Today: RNC night 1 ratings see 50% increase from 2020 convention, Nielsen says).

I guess saying the ratings were better than the most recent convention doesn’t get the clicks the media wants.

  18. It’s just a bunch of people prostrating and humiliating themselves for their Fuhrer Trump.
