China’s government is taking the unusual step of releasing gross domestic product data only online, without giving a news conference.
The National Bureau of Statistics made the announcement on Friday, saying GDP figures for the second quarter between April and June will be posted on its website on Monday.
The bureau did not say why there will be no news conference.
Some sources say the move may be related to the Chinese Communist Party’s key economic policy meeting known as the third plenum, scheduled from Monday through Thursday.
Observers will be watching closely for any information on how Beijing plans to tackle China’s prolonged property crisis and weak domestic demand.
In October 2022, China delayed the release of quarterly GDP data until after the Communist Party’s National Congress, which takes place once every five years.
The figures, which fell short of the government’s targets, were also released online only.
