Community brews up new use for substandard strawberries The city of Kuki near Tokyo is known for its strawberry production. Normally, its fruit must meet certain size and appearance standards for it to be sold, otherwise it’s discarded.

But a beer brewery in the city is trying to put the substandard fruit to a productive use.

A local basketball team took part in preparations for production. They sorted about 20 kilograms of the fruit. It will be added during the brewing process of a new beer product.

A bank based in Saitama Prefecture launched the community-based initiative.

The product is planned to be sold from next month. Fans of the “Wild Bears” basketball team will be able to buy the new beer at venues during games.
