Major Japanese courier firm Sagawa Express says it will introduce the practice of delivering parcels without getting recipients to sign for them, starting in September. The move is aimed at reducing redeliveries amid a shortage of drivers.
Sagawa says people who are willing to have parcels left unattended can register online. Unattended delivery will be possible when the sender is a company or organization.
The sender needs to give prior approval for it to be an option.
A government survey has found that about 10 percent of parcels could not be delivered on the first attempt as of April this year.
Two other courier giants, Yamato Transport and Japan Post Holdings, have also begun unattended deliveries.
The three companies account for more than 90 percent of parcel deliveries in Japan.
