Police in Hawaii on Tuesday say they arrested a 41-year-old Japanese man at Hilo International Airport after airport security agents found hand grenades while screening his carry-on bag.
The police evacuated the area as a precautionary measure while their bomb squad investigated the grenades and eventually determined they were inert.
The evacuation lasted 80 minutes, affecting travelers, airport employees and others.
The police arrested the man on charges of first-degree terroristic threatening and are investigating why he had the grenades in his luggage.
The police and Transportation Security Administration have issued reminders to the public that grenades of any type — including replicas — are not allowed in either checked or carry-on luggage.
