Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have wrapped up a visit to Britain with a stop at Oxford University, where they both studied in their youth.
The Imperial couple arrived at the university’s Balliol College shortly before noon on Friday.
The Empress studied international relations there from 1988 to 1990, when she was an official of the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
The Imperial couple walked around the campus with a professor, supervisor and dormitory manager who served at the college when the Empress was a student.
They later attended a luncheon hosted by the university’s chancellor, and a ceremony where an honorary degree was granted to the Empress.
The Imperial couple also visited Merton College, where the Emperor studied for two years from 1983.
Before travelling to Britain, the Emperor told reporters that he was looking forward to visiting Oxford University with the Empress for the first time and walking around the city together.
