Came across this article tonight and realized how many crazy things are still going on: The five countries that fund the UN peace budget can block any proposal against themselves. No matter how the peace summit turns out, I find the UN pretty useless and dysfunctional. It’s amazing that an organization that is supposed to be in charge of world peace can be so easily influenced by the self-interests of a few powerful nations. Switzerland has always been key to dealing with the consequences of conflict. We took in so many refugees and still held the peace summit in the hope of creating a better future for all. Despite our efforts, it seems that the bigger powers continue to pursue their own agendas and hinder real progress.
I find this extremely unfair and think that this issue needs to be addressed urgently. A body as important as the UN cannot be allowed to be paralyzed by vested interests. Perhaps we need to find new ways to ensure that the voices of all countries are heard equally and that no nation has the power to ignore the will of the international community. It is time we rethink the structure and decision-making processes of the UN to ensure that it is truly at the service of world peace and justice. Only in this way can we hope to create a more just and peaceful world.
