A UN organization has started a new training program to empower women and young people who fled Ukraine to Japan to become economically independent.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization, or UNIDO, produced the Entrepreneurship Development Training for Ukrainian Women and Youth in Japan.
The training program provides Ukrainian evacuees with opportunities to learn entrepreneurial skills and know-how to create new businesses.
Thirty-six Ukrainians participated in a five-day course that started on Monday at the United Nations University in Tokyo. They were taught by instructors from universities and businesses.
On Friday, they were awarded a certificate at a ceremony to mark the completion of their training.
One of those who finished the training, 23-year-old Kateryna Poprozhuk, fled to Japan in 2022. She said she had a media-related job in Ukraine and has wanted to work in a similar field in Japan. She said the program helped her take a step forward.
She added that at the same time she also feels like returning to Ukraine where her family lives, but that for now she intends to do her best in Japan.
UNIDO plans to provide similar training through March next year and create opportunities for Ukrainian women and youth to interact with Japanese businesspeople.
