EU officials approached Baku with a plan to transport Azerbaijani gas to Europe through Ukraine. This was reported by Politico with reference to high-ranking Azerbaijani officials.

"The European Union and the transit countries we are talking about have contacted Azerbaijan on this issue,” Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and head of the foreign policy department of the Presidential Administration, told the publication.

“We are currently looking at various options on how we can contribute to this process. I would refrain from specifying a time frame, but, again, there was… a call, and we took it seriously, because this is a matter of European energy security,” Gadzhiev added.

One European diplomat, who wished to remain anonymous, told the publication that “something is happening on this issue”: “We see some risks to the security of supply when it comes to stopping transit through Ukraine due to existing obstacles in the infrastructure of the European gas system"

European Commission representative Tim McPhee, in a comment to Politico, noted that the EC is working closely with community members in finding alternative routes and gas supplies.

Earlier, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that countries and companies in Europe are discussing how to ensure continued gas supplies through Ukraine after the agreement with the Russian Federation is completed this year. According to some sources, one option being discussed is for European companies to buy gas from Azerbaijan and supply it to Europe through Russian pipelines.
