The operator of Narita Airport near Tokyo says it plans to open a vast new terminal building in the early 2030s.
The project will consolidate the three existing terminals at the site and significantly increase space for planes.
The operator released a draft plan that says it will complete the eastern half of the mega-terminal sometime between 2030 and 2034. It says it will decide when to build the rest based on air travel demand.
The fully completed building will have up to 1.15 million square meters of floor space. It will also allow for an extra 30 aircraft parking bays, taking the total to around 190.
Tamura Akihiko, President & CEO of Narita International Airport said, “I think demand for air travel will grow worldwide. Narita Airport is the gateway to Japan. So it needs to be able to accommodate that growth.”
Narita officials say a third runway slated to open by March 2029 will also allow for a substantial increase in flight volume.
