Russian President Vladimir Putin says he plans to continue military operations in Ukraine for the foreseeable future and that hundreds of thousands of volunteers have signed up with the Russian military.
Putin was speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday.
He said in order for Moscow to defeat the enemy as quickly as possible, its current contingent is insufficient, and that the country adheres to a different tactic.
He said there is no need for Moscow to introduce mobilization as more than 300,000 people volunteered for military service last year, and over 160,000 people so far this year.
The Ukrainian Air Force announced on Saturday that it had shot down a number of Russian drones and missiles in the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv and the Zaporizhzhia region in the south.
This came as Russian ground troops launched a cross-border attack on the Kharkiv region. The regional governor says one person was killed and two injured in the assault.
The United States and other Western nations recently announced that they are allowing Ukraine to strike targets inside Russian territory with weapons they have supplied.
