  1. The African National Congress suffered a crushing blow in the country’s general election, raising questions and uncertainty about the nature of a future coalition government.

With more than 99 percent of the votes counted the ANC had slumped to just 40 percent with the Democratic Alliance in second place on 21.7 percent and the upstart uMkhonto weSizwe party carrying 14.7 percent.

The ANC is in a “state of disbelief” about the election outcome, according to party insiders. It must now consider how it can continue to govern and whether it can retain Cyril Ramaphosa as leader.

Parliament has 14 days to elect a president after the result is declared. The ANC’s next moves will determine its future and the character of the party moving forward.

About time. With all the shit they did with Eskom this was a long time coming. Though if they come to power on the back of Julius Malema, things definitely cannot get better.

  3. I’m not up to snuff with modern South African politics, but it seems like the third and fourth parties in the election embody the worst tendencies of the current ANC (racism, tribalism, kleptocracy, etc). I Don’t think this is a turn for the better.

They’ll still find themselves in a coalition government.

Or will come back to power next election.

    Wait and see.
