Submission Statement: The White House, as of today, has still been resisting pleas from Ukraine as well as hawks on Capitol Hill, the State Department, and European Allies to remove restrictions on Western weapons attacking Russian military targets within the internationally recognized RF boundaries.
Russian officials have made extraordinarily detailed and aggressive nuclear threats against NATO countries, hence why there are still serious limitations on Ukrainian actions.
Commentary: Ultimately this speaks to a trend where the Europeans, because of geography, are feeling much more directly threatened by Russian aggression than the Americans are. I don’t know if Macron really fears that the fall of Ukraine would eventuate the arrival of Russian tanks into Paris, but he’s clearly speaking as such.
Ironically this trend plays into Russian propaganda, which portrays Europeans as cannon fodder for US interests as the Americans must “sacrifice” their allies. In the real world, this hawkishness is a European initiative, not an American one. Fears of Russian expansion onto NATO territory are real.
This fear is clearly why countries such as Poland are making such hawkish comments about intervening in Ukraine. Tusk absolutely fears the arrival of Russian tanks into Warsaw.
