The UN report also addressed the violations by Azerbaijan against its own population, including allegations of torture and ill-treatment, and the harassment of human rights defenders and journalists.

groups of opposition protesters briefly shut down several streets in Yerevan: VIDEO

Protesters used cars to circle around Gyumri. Dozens of people were detained in Yerevan for ignoring police orders after the opposition churchman Bagrat Galstanyan called for activists to "paralyze" Armenia. Protesters complained about excessive force by police.

PROTESTER (to police): I pray that you die, your baby dies. //

SAMVEL BABAYAN (ex-MOD of Nagorno-Karabakh): Armenia must make a strategic choice with its vector. The West wants to take the Turkey-Caucasus-Central Asia logistics and economic zone away from Russia. We must develop the alternative option: the Iran-Armenia-Georgia-Russia link. Which option should we choose? The government and ruling party must resign and announce snap elections to allow the public to choose. Today they say "West"but what exactly does West mean? It means logistics and economic integration of Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Central Asia. If you choose the West’s option, you have to decide how to resolve the Azerbaijan-Nakhijevan transit issue, with Kaliningrad or other methods. As for the AM-AZ border demarcation, [Babayan opposes the 1991 Almaty borders] it must be based on the 1925/26 maps that show the size of Armenia when it joined the USSR – 30,948 km2. //

PETROS GHAZARYAN (H1 host): One of the protest speakers claimed that refugee children from Nagorno-Karabakh are being discriminated against in schools and being seated separately and humiliated. Obviously, no evidence was presented by the speaker. Let’s set aside the fact that the state quickly addressed the refugees’ educational needs. It is disgusting propaganda to claim Armenian teachers discriminate against Artsakhtsi children. The goal is to stoke divisions and to promote Azerbaijan’s narrative. Armenian Homeland Armenia and God is good, but a little nose piercing will not hurt. //

  1. Sacred_Kebab on

Samvel Babayan is making a lot of sense.

Being integrated with (dependent on) Turkey and Azerbaijan would be a huge disaster. It’s insane that Pashinyan is even considering this after we all saw what happened with the Lachin corridor.

He shouldn’t be trying to ram through a “peace deal” on these terms. It doesn’t have the support of the people, no matter how much he wants to pretend the 2021 election gave him a mandate for submitting to Turkish hegemony.

  2. > it must be based on the 1925/26 maps that show the size of Armenia when it joined the USSR – 30,948 km2

Another nutcase in the room. I’m beginning to think that Samvel Babayan’s whole “I could negotiate with the Azeris” was bullshit. Some people would say it always was, but some of us wanted to believe that he actually tried and he could succeed. Nah, not anymore.
