How hypocritical should we be? We bother other countries in the world so much to enhance Italian food and culture, fighting Italian sounding and promoting our PGI and DOP products, demanding that others recognize and protect our interests, but then we oppose it when others they want to do the same. Reading the article, I sympathize with the issue of child labor, but otherwise it seems to me like vulgar protectionism combined with blatant local hypocrisy. Let’s go and annoy American cheese makers because they don’t produce cheeses of Italian origin there, and then, to protect our own, we’ll do what we went to complain about to others. But then I wonder what sense this measure makes, given that basmati rice is not an Italian product. It’s not that the Pakistanis or Indians produce Carnaroli rice, on the contrary, after this maybe I would understand them if out of spite they started producing it to compete with ours. Do we want others to open their doors to us and us to close ours? To make a comparison, it is as if they refused to recognize the PGI protection of Italian rice.
