Hi all, so I’ll be traveling to Macedonia for a few days over the Easter holidays next week/weekend and I’m wondering about getting around inside the country. I’ll be entering from Serbia and spending one night in Skopje before going on to Ohrid, but I can’t figure out whether there’s a train on this route or I need to plan to take a bus instead (I like prefer trains when possible).

The Interrail website has the map above, which shows there is a train, but e website of the MZT train company is a bit… difficult to navigate for a foreigner, and it doesn’t seem to show a train to Ohrid on the list of routes unless I’m missing it.

So, does it still exist or is the Interrail map wrong and this route was discontinued?

Also, just a small side question- is it worth taking one day to see Bitola as well while I’m traveling, or is it better to focus on Ohrid? Thanks in advance for your help!

No . There’s no active railroad in the west part of Macedonia.

There are alot of bus lines skopje-ohrid but the bus system is also a huge mess ,diferent companies drive the same route.

In my opinion the trip in bitola is not worth it. You’ll be stuck in a van (thay call em bus) for 2h on a shity road.

Nope, no train. Also, most likely no train this year to Greece or Serbia. You should only be looking at routes Kumanovo – Skopje and Skopje – Gevgelija. Otherwise, just use a bus.

It’s a pity that our railways have gotten worse then they were 50 years ago, there is some buzz lately about rail transport. Let’s hope that in 10 years we will at least have our old network back.

I feel like Berovo, Kavadarci, Strumica, and Delcevo should also be in some kinda train route that links the East. You guys have a good network running in the center, north and west of the country, expand it!

Unfortunately, train tracks from Skopje to Ohrid end at Kichevo, and I think there no trains to Kichevo anymore as well. I think for Ohrid a bus from Skopje is your best option. I recommend getting one from the company “Galeb”. You can also google them they may have an active website.
