Switzerland is going to pay more than fifty million euros to electrify a rail network… in Germany. The Swiss government has decided to contribute tens of millions to the electrification and expansion of the Upper Rhine section in Germany just north of its border, in a bid to boost rail connections with the Swiss sites of Basel, Schaffhausen and St. Gallen. But it does mean a new express service between the Upper Rhine and the Swiss section of Lake Constance from 2027.
