On Thursday, Oct. 31, Truckee-based band Tim High & the Mighty will bring their unabashed, classic rock stylings. Audiences of all ages will appreciate the songs that make up the fabric of our very existence. Tim’s birthday falls smack dab on Halloween. Here he continues a tradition of putting his heart and soul into constructing a very special night of music to appeal to the masses. This will be an early show, starting at 7:00 p.m. and ending at 10:00 p.m. That means that all ages are welcome until 9:00p.m.!
Every year, Tim and the band pay tribute to the most epic songs from a certain year. This time they’re going with 1971. Think of all the possibilities from legendary albums released that year including Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers, Led Zeppelin IV, Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East, David Bowie Hunky Dory and Pink Floyd Meddle, just to name a few.
As if that wasn’t appealing enough, Tim and the gang will be kicking things off with a set exclusively dedicated to the music of The Doors. This is something we’ve been craving here for a while and we couldn’t be more excited to see this band rise to the occasion to deliver the goods. We’ve often seen Tim do a wicked cover of “Roadhouse Blues,” but it will be an adventure to see him channel the ultimate Jim Morrison vibe as they bring a spectrum of Doors songs into the light.
In addition to the regular members of The Mighty, the ginger viking pirate himself, Jonny Mr. Mojo Rising (Achilles Wheel, Band Beyond Description), will be swashbuckling through the mix with revelational, life-altering guitar licks around every curve. Sprinkling sonic epiphanies through the soundscape will be Ryan Taylor, keyboard wizard from the acclaimed Lake Tahoe band Mescalito. We know Halloween is an action-packed holiday in Nevada City, but for hardcore live music fans, there’s no other place you would want to be.
Then, on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 9:00 p.m., LAZWELL will be joined by DJ Kronosaurus Flex. Lantz Lazwell is a larger-than-life figure — part guitar hero, part comic book character, part international man of mystery. When fronting his band, LAZWELL (formerly Lantz Lazwell & The Vibe Tribe), you’ll never find him deeper in his element. Audiences have no choice but to throw caution to the wind as LAZWELL leads the way through a multi-layered, poly-textural labyrinth of funky, bluesy, rock ‘n soul. Captivating jamming is only part of the equation for LAZWELL. The stylishly-attired frontman commands the stage with the charisma of a natural-born performer.
LAZWELL grabs hold like a purple-feathered boa constrictor, delving into unexpected regions of funk, soul, blues and jam rock. LAZWELL manages to balance a “man of the people” vibe while also seeming like an alien from the soul planet. Once his band gets cookin’, they are a downright dance floor killah!
The sonic voodoo takes flight as they slay reinvented covers and make you fall you in love with their remarkably fresh originals. There’s a certain grittiness at play here which has a primal sensuality to it that is more than enough to awaken your pleasure centers. The saxophone work of Eric Weber (Swamp Zen) plays a big role in the band’s soaring sound. Day of the Dead is the perfect holiday for this band to celebrate on this particular occasion.
Lantz Lazwell has shared the stage with such greats as George Clinton, Bernie Worrel (Talking Heads), Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), Angelo Moore and Norwood Fisher (Fishbone) and The Neville Brothers. He drew praise recently as an artist-at-large at the For the Funk of It Festival, making a splash while collaborating with an array of top talent. His band continues to gain momentum with appearances around the region.
Jonathan Scales Fourchesta with DJ Sancho Panza
Rounding out the trifecta is Jonathan Scales Fourchesta with DJ Sancho Panza on Sunday, November 3 from 9:00 p.m. to midnight. Jonathan Scales is widely regarded as the most innovative steel pannist on the planet, and is redefining and challenging traditional expectations of his signature instrument. In his hands, the sonic palette of an instrument often associated with cruise ships and tropical resorts is radically expanded to mimic the role of horns, piano, vibraphone or marimba due to his stunning, virtuosic technique. Scales’ mesmerizing compositions have captivated listeners and elevated him to the status of a true composer.
Jonathan Scales Fourchestra is forging new territory in the medium of instrumental music. Climb aboard on a journey fueled by in-your-face, jaw-dropping chops, oozing with passion, to those quiet moments when the background noise disappears and you hold your breath to take in the soundscape of solitude. Practically levitating on the basis of otherworldly brilliance, the power trio of electric bass (E’Lon JD), drums (Maison Guidry) and steel pans (Jonathan Scales) combines elements of jazz, classical and progressive rock, peppered with Latin rhythms and soulful outbursts of funk.
From club and festival stages across North America and Europe, and tours of Africa, Southeast and Central Asia as a cultural ambassador for the US Department of State, to their NPR Tiny Desk Concert featuring Bela Fleck, the Fourchestra’s live shows make even the most jaded listeners forget where they are…even if just for a precious moment. It’s very rare to witness virtuosic musicianship of this caliber at the Crazy Horse; especially of the jazz variety. This band comes from Asheville, NC and we all know how devastated that city is from Hurricane Helene. We are billing this as a benefit for the musicians of Asheville who have been affected, so please consider donating anything you are able beyond the ticket price.
“To say I am impressed would be a gross understatement! Wow, Jonathan!” — Bela Fleck
“Jonathan Scales brings new vitality to the traditional Caribbean instrument, picking up where Othello Molineaux left off 20 years ago with Jaco Pastorius.” — Jazz Times
