“Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd” this weekend at Riverhead High School, where the Blue Masques student theatre troupe will present their fall musical, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”
Just in time for the Halloween season, the musical thriller follows Sweeney Todd, a murderous barber bent on revenge against those who unjustly imprisoned him, and his accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, who bakes Sweeney’s victims into meat pies to sell at her failing shop.
Performances are on Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Riverhead High School auditorium. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $5 for Riverhead students with their student ID.
Sweeney Todd, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim with a book by Hugh Wheeler, originally premiered on Broadway in 1979. It is an adaptation of a 1970 play based on a character that appeared in a story published in a 1846 U.K. penny dreadful serial. It was revived on Broadway last year with a production starring singer Josh Groban.
The musical was adapted into a film in 2007 directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman.
The Blue Masques production stars Noah Lake as Weeney Todd; Cheyanne Metzger as Mrs. Lovett; Anthony Catarelli as Anthony Hope; Olivia Sulzer as Johanna; John Ellis as Tobias Ragg; Owen Karlson as Judge Turpin; Hannah Schmidt as the Beggar Woman; Jarell Gilliam as Beadle; Diego Puluc as Adolfo Pirelli; and Damon Lecann as Jonas Fogg.
